Word Wizard privacy policy

Word Wizard is an offline dictionary, flashcard and word-game app made by William Gill. This page explains what the app does with your data. The short version: almost everything stays on your device, and nothing leaves it without you doing something that visibly sends it.

What stays on your device

Everything you do in the app is stored only on your phone:

• the words you look up, save and study, your review history and study settings;
• your notes on words, your reading list and the texts you paste into the Reader;
• your crossword and Word Hunt puzzles, progress, scores and times;
• your reminder settings.

Word Wizard has no user accounts and no server of its own. We have no way to see any of this. Deleting the app deletes it all. The app's standard backup behaviour on your platform (Google or iCloud device backup) may include this data, under your platform's own terms.

The dictionary is bundled with the app, so looking words up needs no network and sends nothing anywhere.

Clipboard

The Reader tab can offer to read text you've copied, so you can paste an article and tap words in it. The clipboard is only read while Word Wizard is the active app, only to show you that text, and the text is stored on your device like any other reading.

What leaves your device, and when

Bug reports and suggestions. Settings → Report a bug or suggest a feature sends what you type, any screenshots or photos you choose to attach, and — only if you enter it — your email address, together with the app version and your device's operating system version. This goes to the developer's mailbox by way of a relay running on Google's Apps Script platform, subject to Google's privacy policy. Reports are kept as long as needed to act on them. Nothing is sent unless you press Send; a report written offline waits on your device until it can go.

Optional AI features. Two features can use an AI model from OpenAI, and only if you have pasted your own OpenAI API key into Settings:

• the crossword AI editor, which sends a finished puzzle's answers and clues to be rewritten;
• the guess from the clues recall game, which sends a study word and its dictionary definition to get hints written.

What is sent is dictionary content and puzzle content, not your notes or reading. It is sent directly from your device to OpenAI under your own key and OpenAI's API terms and privacy policy. Your key is stored in your device's secure keystore and is never sent anywhere but to OpenAI. Without a key these features are simply switched off, and the app works fully without them.

Nothing else. Word Wizard has no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting service and no tracking of any kind. It does not read your contacts, location, camera or microphone. The photo library is opened only when you tap Add a photo on a bug report, and only the photo you pick is used.

Notifications

Daily word reminders are scheduled on your device by the app itself. They contain a word from your study list and its meaning. No notification service outside your device is involved.

Children

Word Wizard is a general-audience dictionary and study app. It does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, children included.

Your choices

• Turn reminders off in Settings.
• Remove your OpenAI key in Settings to switch the AI features off.
• Delete the app to delete everything it stores.
• Ask for a bug report you sent to be deleted by writing to the address below.

Changes

If Word Wizard gains accounts, sync, purchases or social features, this policy will change to say exactly what data those involve, and the app will show the new version before any such data is collected.

Advertising

The free version shows ads from Google AdMob: a banner under dictionary entries and, occasionally, a full-screen ad when a review session ends. Premium has no ads. AdMob receives your device's advertising identifier and technical details about the device and app so that it can serve and measure ads; where the law requires it, the app first asks for your consent and you can decline personalised ads (and on iOS, tracking). Google's use of this data is described in Google's privacy policy; nothing about your vocabulary, notes or lookups is sent to it.

Accounts

An account is optional. You can create one with your email address (we send a sign-in link and code; there is no password), or with your Apple or Google account, in which case Apple or Google tells us your email address and a random identifier and nothing else; we do not receive your contacts, calendar or anything from those accounts. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we see only the relay address. We keep the email address to sign you in and to identify your Premium entitlement. Deleting your account (Settings → Account) removes it and what the server holds for it.

Purchases

Premium is bought through the App Store or Google Play. The store handles payment; we never see your card details. We use RevenueCat to check what you have bought: it receives your store receipt and, if you are signed in, your account's random identifier, so that Premium can follow your account between devices. We keep a record of your entitlement (which product, when it renews or ends) and, for Founding Member purchases, the store's transaction reference, in order to honour the purchase and the limit on places. Nothing about your vocabulary is sent to the store or to RevenueCat.

Groups

If you join a group, the name you choose for it and — only if you switch on "Share my words" — the headwords of the words you're studying are stored on our server and visible to the group's members, and are used to build the group's puzzles. Your notes, the meanings you pinned and your lookup history are never shared. Your scores on group puzzles are visible to the group. Switching sharing off or leaving removes your words immediately; deleting your account removes your memberships, words and scores.

Leaderboard

If you choose to join the puzzle leaderboard, the public name you pick and your puzzle points (with how many puzzles they came from) are stored on our server and shown to anyone using the app, signed in or not. Nothing else — not your email, your words, or which puzzles you played — is shown. You can change the name or leave the board at any time in Settings → Account; leaving removes you from it immediately.
